 Valentine’s Day Musings

The most important phrase in any language consists of three simple words: "I-Love-You". Whether we say these words or they are said to us, they mark the beginning of our most cherished relationships.

The magic of roses is that when we give to our loved ones we say "I love you" without uttering a word. Yet they know exactly what we feel.

Reflecting on this brought to mind one of my favorite books, "The Little Prince,"* where the emotional, grandiose and vulnerable rose embodies the complexities of love and relationships.

The Little Prince lived on his tiny planet, Asteroid B-612, when he noticed a strange new flower about to bloom. He “realized that some sort of miraculous apparition would emerge from the bud, but the flower continued her beauty preparations in the shelter of her green chamber … she wished to appear only in the full radiance of her beauty.

“And then one morning, precisely at sunrise, she showed herself.”

“The little prince couldn't contain his admiration. “How lovely you are!”

“Aren't I?” the flower answered sweetly. “And I was born at the same time as the sun...”   The little prince realized that she wasn't very modest, but she was so dazzling!””

Why Is It So Hard To Formulate A Rose Scent?

Roses inspire and symbolize love, passion, and luxury. Little wonder that perfumers have been striving to recreate the magic of the rose’s scent for centuries.

Pity The Perfumer!

When formulating a rose fragrance, the first question is: which rose scent do I aim to formulate? Roses come in such a profusion of scents, intensities and moods.  Just a few examples: “oriental” roses are rich, honeyed and luscious; Bulgarian roses are seductively spicy and intoxicating; French roses are opulent and velvety, while the English roses are light, supple and fresh, evoking green leaves and dew.

And that’s before considering intensity, longevity, and sillage. It is a challenging brain-teaser. Maybe more accurately, a nose-teaser.

Creating The Perfect Rose Fragrance Car Diffuser

Because an important objective for a luxury car fragrance diffuser is to rejuvenate, I favored a modern interpretation of rose fragrance - the top and mid notes are a ‘classic’ rose, but the overall composition is light, airy and subtly green. A freshly cut rose with the stem and leaves lightly drizzled with dew.

The Sugar Doozy Car Diffuser Fragrance: An Effortlessly Luxurious Rose

The diffuser disperses a layered fragrance. Depending on the temperatures and circulation in your car, you will discern a slightly different rose on each trip, yet the overall presentation is an effortlessly luxurious rose.

Last Word on the Three Most Important Words

We would love to be part of your Valentine's day gift giving. But there's a much more important takeaway in this post: it doesn't matter how you say “I Love You”. What matters is that you say it.

The little prince can tell you why: “She perfumed my planet and lit up my life. I ought to have realized the tenderness underlying her silly pretensions … But I was too young to know how to love her.”

Say it, and enjoy a beautiful Valentine’s day.

*Published in 1943, "The Little Prince" is one of the most enduring and beloved classics of modern literature. At first glance it may appear to be a simple picture book for children, but it delves deeply into themes of loneliness, friendship, love, and loss, resonating with wisdom and humanity for readers of all ages.

I read the Little Prince every 10 years or so. As I accumulate years and experiences, I discover in its pages new beauty and emotional nuance each and every time.
